Nursing Spotlight: Andrea, LVN, 3South
"Since I was a little girl, I always knew that I wanted to be a nurse’"
Andrea
has had the drive to become a nurse ever since she was
young. So, when she moved here from Mexico when she
was 17 years old, she took classes to finish high school,
earned her GED at Rio Hondo College and learned English.
With the help of her college counselor, she was encouraged to pursuing nursing. She first came in contact with White Memorial Medical Center when she began her clinical rounds on 5Main and 4Main.
“This teaching hospital really gives you the opportunity to continue to grow,” said Andrea, “they want to teach you.”
Once she finished her program and became an LVN, she came back to work at WMMC full time on 3South. “I knew I wanted to work here. I was scared as a new grad, but being back at White Memorial, I felt comfortable and familiar in my surroundings,” said Andrea.
Besides enjoying the relationships, compatibility and teamwork she shares with her fellow nurses at WMMC, she is happy to provide a comfortable experience to her patients. Because she is fluent in Spanish, Andrea can translate for confused patients, as well as other nurses and physicians. “It makes me feel really good, knowing that I can help out so many people. It is always a better experience for the patient, when they understand what is going on,” said Andrea.
Besides the excellent training she is receiving, Andrea comes from a supportive family. Her parents and especially her husband have been encouraging her throughout her studies and are continually supporting her. Andrea’s mother is her biggest fan, always willing to talk about her successful daughter.
Her mother’s illness of breast cancer has pushed Andrea to take her career a step further. She will be starting another year of school, while working part-time, to become a Registered Nurse. After she gets experience on this level of nursing, she would like to focus her career in a specialty field.
After routinely taking her mother to chemotherapy treatments and constantly being by her side, Andrea made up her mind to specialize in cancer services as a chemotherapy nurse. Andrea’s passion to help others, while fulfilling her own dreams, is what makes her a compassionate and standout individual at WMMC.
Andrea plans to keep on living a happy life with her husband, as she has been for the last five years. She hopes to have a baby soon after she successfully graduates from a RN program.
