Nursing Spotlight: Elisa, RN, Orthopedics (4N)

"There’s never a dull day working here."

ElisaElisa grew up in a family of eleven children in the Philippines. Influenced by one of her sisters, she decided to pursue a nursing career. She received her nursing training in the Philippines and spent seven years working as a nurse there. Elisa recalls her time as a nurse in the Philippines as being very different from working in the United States. She did not enjoy it and soon began to crave something more exciting.

Elisa contemplated becoming a soldier, but decided to become a police officer instead. She spent five years working as an undercover police officer. During this time, she also married and had a daughter. Due to the dangerous nature of her job and desire to take care of her family, she decided to leave the police force.

Not wanting to go back to her old position as a nurse in the Philippines, she and her husband decided to come to the United States. They knew that they would have to work long hours and decided to leave their daughter in the Philippines with Elisa’s mother. She spent a year in Wisconsin working as a nurse and building on the English skills she had been taught as an elementary student in the Philippines. With three of her sisters living in Los Angeles, she decided to join them and be near more of her family. She also had a friend that worked in the DOU at White Memorial who encouraged her to apply for a position.

Elisa truly enjoys working at White Memorial. She has only worked at WMMC for one year, but has already become a mentor to nursing students and serves as a charge nurse when needed. “There’s never a dull day working here,” says Elisa. She also says that she tries to picture herself in the patients’ shoes and treat them how she would want to be treated.

“Elisa is an excellent nurse. She always gets a good response from her patients,” said Annette San Augustin, manager of orthopedics (4N). Elisa is a true asset to WMMC.  Even though she has only been here for a year, she has already been awarded the Most Compassionate Nurse Award.
