What Our Nurses Are Saying About White Memorial
Andrea, LVN, 3South
“While
in college, I began my clinical rounds at White
Memorial. This teaching hospital really gives
you the opportunity to continue to grow; they
want to teach you. I knew I wanted to work
here. I was scared as a new grad, but being
back at White Memorial, I felt comfortable
and familiar in my surroundings”
Andrea, LVN, finished her LVN program and came back to work at WMMC full time on 3South. She will be starting another year of school, while working part-time, to become a Registered Nurse.
Angie, RN, & Vicky, LVN, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Angie
and Vicky have given their professional lives
to serving White Memorial’s smallest patients.
“We love the babies and pray for them everyday.”
They are enjoying the new NICU in the specialty
care tower and say that they especially like
the quiet atmosphere for the babies and the extra
privacy the parents can have when they visit
because of the larger NICU.
Angie, RN, and Vicky, LVN, (retired) are dedicated NICU nurses who have a combined total of 58 years of nursing experience. They have both worked at White Memorial since early in their nursing careers and were both on staff in the NICU when its doors first opened in 1978.

Bless, RN, Same Day Surgery
“White
Memorial was the first hospital to call me
after graduation. And what I found has kept
me here for almost five years. The people I
work with are great; we have a close team.
Plus, I love that White Memorial is a teaching
hospital, because they really care about helping
employees further our education. I feel like
I have the best job.”
Bless, RN, started working at White Memorial as a recent graduate from San Francisco State University. She has been a member of the Same Day Surgery nursing team for almost five years.
Cathleen, RN, Intensive Care Unit
“I was born at White Memorial, and
grew up around this community. Ever since I was
a little girl my grandma encouraged me to become
a nurse, and work for White Memorial. I’ve
done many other jobs, but none has brought me
the same kind of happiness and satisfaction that
I get from caring for patients at White Memorial
– it’s the patients we serve that
keep me here.”
Cathleen, RN, has grown professionally at WMMC for 22 years. She began her nursing career as a LVN, and a few years later completed her nursing degree from East Los Angeles College. Today, she is a member of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing team.
Maria Elisa, RN, Orthopedics (4N)
“I truly enjoy working at White Memorial.
There’s
never a dull day working here. I try
to picture myself in the patients’ shoes
and treat them how I would want to be treated.”
Maria Elisa, RN, is a true asset to WMMC. Even though she has only been here for a year, she has already become a mentor to nursing students and serves as a charge nurse when needed. She has also been awarded the Most Compassionate Nurse Award.
Erwin, RN, Behavioral Medicine, South B Unit
“I appreciate White Memorial’s
focus on patients – the conscientious attitude
toward helping the client get better. The betterment
and recovery of the patient is the first and
foremost responsibility here, and it is a priority
of this hospital.”
As a charge nurse in White Memorial’s Behavioral Medicine Department, Erwin, RN, leads a team of mental health professionals who deal with the most gravely disabled psychiatric patients — men and women who must be checked on every 15 minutes and require assistance for even their most basic needs.
Jazmin, RN, Definitive Observation Unit
“I
was really impressed by the staff at White
Memorial when I came as a student. Everybody
was willing to help, and the learning environment
here was great. I did rotations at other hospitals,
too, but I really liked White Memorial the
best.”
Jazmin, RN, received a scholarship from the TELACU Education Foundation, which provides assistance to Latino students who are interested in a career in nursing. Following graduation with an associate’s degree in nursing in 2004, Jazmin was hired to work in the DOU, and has been on staff since then. She said she has found her fellow employees to be just as helpful as they were when she was a student nurse at the hospital.
Jenny, LVN, Skilled Nursing Unit (5 Main)
“I
love working at White Memorial. I love working
with my RN supervisors and I appreciate how
flexible and supportive everyone is about gaining
more education.”
Jenny, LVN, began working on her CNA at Allied Health Services in Glendale. She then went on to LVN training at Marion College in Los Angeles. She will also continue with her education by starting her RN training in the spring at Los Angeles City College.
Kathleen, RN, Intensive Care Unit
“White Memorial was a natural choice
for me for several reasons. I love that it’s
a service-oriented hospital where patients appreciate
the care we provide, and that it’s a place
where people really know what it means to be part
of a team. If you love teamwork, you’ll
want to work at White Memorial. Also, White Memorial
has made a real effort to meet my professional
needs. The experience I’m getting in the
critical care unit is invaluable in achieving
my career goals.”
Kathleen, RN, recently joined the WMMC Nursing Team on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She is a graduate of the University of California at San Diego and the University of Southern California.
Lupe, LVN, Float Pool
“My
friend told me about White Memorial because
he loves working here. Now, I love working
here too because the people are friendly and
supportive. The nurses I work with are very
intelligent and will go out of their way to
help me when I need it. I definitely want to
stay here when I finish my degree.”
Lupe, LVN, has worked in the float pool for seven years. Flexible scheduling has helped Lupe pursue her nursing degree at East Los Angeles College while gaining valuable hands-on experience at WMMC.
Sheryl, RN, 4 Main
“I like this place very much. I’m
so comfortable here. There’s a feeling of
family. Even when you’re tired, you feel
like you have really helped other people, and
they appreciate what you have done for them.
You feel rewarded.”
Sheryl, RN, uses her education, skills and seven years of experience as a registered nurse to help rehabilitation patients prepare to return to their life outside the hospital. For most of her career, Sheryl was a registry nurse, working for a company that supplies nurses for short assignments to hospitals when they have an unexpected rise in hospitalized patients or a shortage of nurses. Throughout her registry career, Sheryl always enjoyed working at White Memorial most. Then just over two years ago, she made the decision to come to White Memorial as a full-time employee.
Shirley, RN, Operating Room
“I’ve
worked at a couple other hospitals, and none have
given me the same sense of purpose as White Memorial.
I think it has to do with the hospital’s
commitment to their spiritual mission. Also, the
staff and surgeons are very nice. In fact, it’s
at this hospital where I learned what teamwork
really means.”
Shirley, RN, moved to the United States three years ago from the Philippines where she completed her nursing degree at St. Louis University in Baguio City. She’s currently a member of the Operating Room nursing team.
Sylvia, RN, Pediatrics Unit
“The camaraderie at White Memorial
is exceptional. Doctors are approachable and nurses
are friendly. Over the years, I have seen many
opportunities for growth and advancement. As a
trainer for new nurses, I can confidently say
that our service theme is not just a frame on
the wall – we really strive to be caring
people caring for people.”
Sylvia, RN, loves training and orienting new nurses in the Pediatrics Unit through our preceptorship program. She started working here as a new graduate from Loma Linda University 27 years ago.
Zarah, RN, Float Pool
“I love White Memorial because it has
a friendly work environment. As a new nurse, I
really appreciate that the other nurses are always
willing to help me and teach me new ways of doing
things. I didn’t find this level of care
at any of the other hospitals where I’ve
worked.”
Zarah, RN, recently joined the WMMC nursing team as a float nurse. She studied at Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod in the Philippines, and worked through a registry at several hospitals before choosing WMMC as her professional home.
