Nursing Spotlight: Angie, RN, and Vicky, LVN, Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

"We Love the Babies"

Vicky, LVN, and Angie, RN

Angie, RN, and Vicky, LVN, are dedicated NICU nurses who have a combined total of 58 years of nursing experience. They have both worked at White Memorial since early in their nursing careers and were both on staff in the NICU when its doors first opened in 1978.

As a child, Angie wanted to be an engineer. At the suggestion of her brother, she decided to pursue nursing. Now, she is very grateful for her brother’s advice. Having served as a nurse for 30 years, she has come to enjoy every aspect of her job. “I love working with people. It’s so rewarding to care for a baby, help him or her improve physically and watch them go home,” says Angie.

Angie is so dedicated to her career that she also has worked part-time at Kaiser Permanente for the last 18 years. “I feel blessed that I get to help so many people,” says Angie.

Angie received her nursing training in the Philippines and then worked in Germany and Texas, before settling down in Los Angeles. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She believes that education is very important and has made helping her children through college one of her top priorities.

Vicky first discovered nursing when her mother became ill and had to receive treatment. She saw the difference the nurses made in the lives of those they cared for, and, having a strong desire to help others herself, Vicky decided to pursue nursing as her own career.

Vicky came to Los Angeles from Colorado, where she obtained her nursing license. Through her years here, Vicky has had many experiences that have touched her. She recalls visitations by grateful parents after they have been able to take their child home, and recently attended the graduation service of one the babies she cared for many years ago.

Vicky was even named by one of her patients. Early in her nursing career, she had a patient that was not able to say her real name, “Viola”, so he decided to call her Vicky. From that point on, she’s been known by all as Vicky.

Angie and Vicky have given their professional lives to serving White Memorial’s smallest patients. Having spent so many years at White Memorial, they feel like the NICU staff is their family. They are enjoying the new NICU in the specialty care tower and say that they especially like the quiet atmosphere for the babies and the extra privacy the parents can have when they visit because of the larger NICU.

Angie and Vicky truly put their hearts into their work. “We love the babies and pray for them everyday.”
