Rainbow Children's Center: Providing Affordable Community Childcare
Yanira Mejia swoops her 8-month-old son, Christian, up from his infant rocker and gives him a big smile and a kiss. Its been more than nine hours since she dropped Christian and big brother Alexis off at the MAOF/White Memorial Rainbow Childrens Center on her way to work, and shes happy to see her boys again.
Christian was the youngest infant enrolled when the new childcare center opened at WMMC January 2001. The Rainbow Childrens Center is a joint venture between the Mexican-American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) and WMMC. It provides day care for children of families throughout surrounding communities, as well as for WMMC staff.
Our Vision
The Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) and White Memorial Medical Center (WMMC) partnered to bring quality childcare for children of WMMC employees and local families. We want to create a learning environment that enriches the human spirit and teaches important skills in a variety of areas.
Our innovative program prepares children to be successful in our multicultural society by fostering respect for diversity, and exposing them to lessons in English and Spanish.
Our Objectives
• Create a safe and nurturing environment
• Foster language/literacy development
• Create engaging classroom activities
• Enhance multicultural awareness
• Inspire independent and logical thinking
• Create responsible and confident leaders
• Foster socio-emotional development
• Teach new knowledge and skills
• Promote healthy habits
• Involve parents in their child’s education
• Give children all the attention they need
The Benefits of Our Curriculum
MAOF/WMMC Rainbow Children’s Center has adopted a special curriculum known as “Highscope.” Through this approach, children are encouraged to make decisions on activities and materials throughout the day. As they pursue their choices, children explore, ask and answer questions, solve problems, and interact with classmates and adults. This exciting environment makes it easier to learn and helps children take big steps in their personal growth.
Our Commitment to Quality
The Rainbow Children’s Center is the only childcare center in the neighborhoods east of downtown Los Angeles that is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). We have been serving the community since 2001, and are licensed to enroll up to 82 children from the ages of six weeks to five years old.
MAOF/WMMC Rainbow Children’s Center is committed to hiring and training qualified and experienced staff to better serve children and their parents. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) has certified all Rainbow Children’s Center teachers.
Children's Library
Funded by Para Los Niños and staffed by a trained librarian, the library offers a variety of children's books in English and Spanish. Parents and children can check books out during the following hours:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday
2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Tuition
Tuition is based on an eight-hour day, and includes three nutritional meals for children eating solid foods. Parents must provide food for infants on formula, Gerber’s, rice cereal or other soft food diets.
For WMMC employees working a 12-hour shift, the hospital covers the cost of the last four hours of childcare. Free childcare services or reduced daily rates are available for parents who qualify based on financial need.
