Diabetes is the leading contributor to death and disability among adults 45 and older in WMMC’s service area, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Diabetes has been described as “epidemic” among the Latino population; it is present in 40 percent of WMMC’s patients and 80 percent of its cardiac surgery patients.

Diabetes mellitus (MEL-ih-tus), or simply, diabetes, is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body's ability to produce and/or use insulin. [American Diabetes Association]

Nearly 50,000 people in the East Los Angeles area have diabetes. That’s not surprising, since one in seven Latinos and one in four Mexican-Americans over the age of 45 are diabetic.
