. Most Proud Accomplishment/s: I competed for the NCAA division I Championship on the women’s golf team. Not only did this allow me to walk in beautiful places, but I also learned tremendous focus, patience and the power of practice, working hard and repetition. I feel I apply these valued tools every day. I am also very proud of writing and performing music all around Los Angeles. Not only was it incredibly fun, I learned much regarding my self-expression. I think that I’m most proud of my family and friends. I have a wonderful group of people in my life that are so loving and inspirational. They make me count my blessings every day.

. Most Proud Accomplishment/s: The thing I am most proud of is my personal growth. On my journey toward becoming a physician I was exposed to a social environment that presented barriers to higher education, such as low educational attainment and low income, among others. But these experiences have motivated me to look deeper within myself to find the strength to overcome them, and to make small changes in the social world that surrounds me. Today, through this process, I have come to value and believe that change is possible.

. Most Proud Accomplishment/s: At the end of 2009 I achieved a brown belt in the hybridized style of martial arts, Bok-Fu. I thus earned my second of three black belt degrees in this style and became the first and only female in my dojo to do so. This was extremely meaningful to me because not only was I able to accomplish this in the midst of injury, medical school rotations, and residency interviews, but I also exemplified my dojo motto: “Man has no limits until he exceeds them.”

. Most Proud Accomplishment/s: I am most proud of being a mom and wife while juggling medical school. Medical school was challenging on its own. However, I strived every day to be the nurturing and caring mom to my 2-year-old daughter and husband of eight years. I am also very proud of being the first person in my family to attend college and receive a medical degree. Although my parents are Mexican immigrants with minimal education, they always supported my goals of attending college and becoming a doctor.

I studied various healing modalities including herbal medicines and supplements, acupressure, cranio-sacral therapy and reiki. Additionally, I worked with farmers and farm-workers in Watsonville and the Central Valley, helping them to transition to more sustainable farming methods. I am also a founding board member of WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms – USA, which creates opportunities for educational exchange around growing food and sustainable living.
