White Memorial is located in the Boyle Heights area of Greater East Los Angeles, in the heart of a bustling multicultural neighborhood in which a sizable majority of people are Latino. Young working families predominate and create a busy environment.

East Los Angeles is also a federally designated medically underserved community creating for the hospital and the residency a unique setting to develop and initiate programs which will identify and correct community wide health needs. The Family Medicine Residency Program and Family Health Center have been welcomed by this community. The residency continues to make positive contributions to the community that goes well beyond the exemplary health care which we provide.

  • Located near Olvera Street, the site of the original 'Pueblo de Los Angeles', the community is rich in Hispanic tradition and culture.
  • The city of Pasadena and its multifaceted offerings are within a few minutes on surface streets.
  • Excellent freeway access makes it easy to reach the Music Center, the Kodak Theatre and Hollywood theaters or the many sports arenas of greater Los Angeles.
  • The same freeway network makes it convenient to spend time in the sun in Palm Springs, ski the San Bernardino mountains, or visit miles of sandy beach on the westerly fringes of the city.
  • The endless variety of restaurants and night life caters to all tastes and budgets, while the imposing museums and libraries provide cultural sustenance of high order.

Housing is available on campus locally and in nearby communities of Glendale, South Pasadena, Eagle Rock, etc.

Practice Opportunities

In addition to many opportunities in the State of California, program graduates have been offered competitive private practice opportunities within the hospital's trade area. These opportunities will be free of all costs, will provide guaranteed income and will provide an academic appointment and an opportunity to teach in the residency.

About the Hospital

White Memorial Medical Center is a 353 bed acute care teaching hospital, offering tertiary care services to the community. WMMC is owned and operated by Adventist Health, the 4th largest not-for-profit health care organization in America. Community Activities

White Memorial maintains a high level of contact with the community, participating in health screening programs and health fairs. Its "Helping Hands" program provides food shopping, meal preparation, child care, clothing and transportation for patients newly discharged from the hospital.

As a community hospital, White Memorial offers care to a patient population whose age, sex, ethnic and socioeconomic mix reflects the makeup of the community. The pathologic, emotional and social conditions encountered are of the variety and incidence which one would expect to encounter in private practice in California. This patient/pathology mix is especially appropriate for family medicine training.
