Books and audiovisual materials are available for loan. Journals, newspapers, and reference materials are not for loan and have to be used inside the library.

The loan period is two weeks with the option of renewal (either in person or by phone) unless requested by another member. Late charges are 10¢ per day for materials not returned by the due date; the charge for lost items is the replacement cost of the item plus $5.00. The loan privileges of borrowers who do not return items by the due date will be suspended in the event of repeated abuses.

Reference Services

The librarians provide answers to reference questions (where to find a particular book, a hospital address, a definition, etc.) using the library collection and/or the Internet.  Advice is also given regarding filing systems, end user computer searching, preparing manuscripts for publication, etc. The librarians also provide library members up-to-date citations and abstracts on medical, nursing, and allied health topics depending on their search requests.

Requests for literature searches are accepted in person, on the phone, by fax, or email. All literature searches are done on MEDLINE® (the National Library of Medicine’s bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, and veterinary medicine), the CINAHL® database, and on the Internet.

How to use: Literature searches are available to members.  Simply call or come in and discuss your topic with one of our trained search analysts.

Search requests are generally available within two days after receipt of the request, and you will be notified for collection.  Patrons desiring to do so may be present as the search is being run.

Interlibrary Loans

Books, journal articles, and audiovisuals not available in the library can be requested from other libraries through the interlibrary loan system.

How to use:  The interlibrary loan service is available to all library members for a fee. To obtain an interlibrary loan, library members need to fill in a request form available from the information desk in the library. Requests are also accepted by phone or fax.

When requesting interlibrary loans, please  provide citation  information about the item and your phone number. You will be notified when your request is ready for collection. Please allow at least one week for mail and two days for fax requests.

Current Awareness

The Current Awareness Service (CAS) allows health professionals to select journals received by the library for regular review. The library assistant will photocopy the table of contents of each selected journal issue as it arrives and send it to the hospital employee. The employee may then mark two articles of interest to be photocopied and mailed.

How to use: The CAS is available to all hospital employees free of charge. Request forms are available at the library information desk.

Photocopying

A photocopy machine is available for all library members. Library patrons need to be aware of  copyright law and abide by “fair use” guidelines.

How to use:  Residents, approved medical staff, and hospital employees may make copies and charge the cost to their departments. Other library members need to pay for copying. The fee for photocopying is 10¢ per page.

Cinahl Journal Collection

The journals indexed in the CINAHL® database can be viewed at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Library. There is a charge for photocopies.
