Rebuilding Project

Working With Our Community

Nursing StationAs the hospital moves forward with this rebuilding project, we have two primary goals: to keep our community members informed of what is happening and to listen to their thoughts and feelings about the project.

Nine study teams composed of doctors, directors, managers and employees were asked to identify the best and most cost-effective process by which care can be delivered in the new hospital, and where the various services will be located. These teams have made many recommendations that will be implemented.

Community focus groups have also made additional recommendations on all aspects of patient care, and members of hospital leadership have visited other medical facilities to determine what works best.

We are also communicating with our community members in the following ways:

  • Community leaders and employees living in the community participated in the design advisory group and provided input into the new hospital design.

  • Patients, visitors and community members have participated in walk-throughs of a patient room and provided input into the new design.

  • The hospital conducted one-to-one presentations with our neighbors about overall project, providing written materials in Spanish and English.

  • The hospital hosted a reception and tours for neighbors of the central utilities buildings in September 2001.

  • The hospital holds ongoing meetings and briefings with key community groups and elected officials.

  • We are conducting door-to-door communication (in English and Spanish) with local neighbors, businesses, schools and churches regarding a temporary closure of Boyle Avenue. When no one is home, written information will be left. Written notification will also be provided to all other public, private and community agencies likely to be affected, including LAPD, LA County and City Fire Departments, the Sanitation Department, taxi companies and ambulance companies.
