After celebrating the grand opening of the new specialty care tower on April 9, 2006, White Memorial prepared to move in.
On Wednesday, April 26, 2006, the hospital successfully moved its acute-care patients and opened outpatient services in the new specialty care tower. The move began at 6:30 a.m. with the Emergency Department, and ended at 5:10 p.m., about 90 minutes ahead of schedule. A total of 94 patients were moved.
The move went very well, with staff, physicians and residents showing outstanding dedication and teamwork. All patients were moved safely, and were settled into their new units.
There were some technical and equipment glitches throughout the day, as you’d expect with any large-scale facility move. Hospital support staff from Information Systems, Telecommunications, Environmental Services, and Biomedical Engineering were on scene swiftly to resolve each problem quickly and efficiently.

The first new baby was delivered in the new specialty care tower at about 2:40 p.m., by resident Nah Yong Moon, MD under the supervision of Kathryn Shaw, MD. The mother, Lizbeth, delivered in one of the new tower’s 10 spacious Labor, Delivery and Recovery rooms (LDRs). “It’s beautiful,” she said. “The rooms are bigger, the view is impressive and the service is excellent.”
“We are so proud of our team and their teamwork,” said Beth Zachary, President & CEO. “We expected things to go smoothly, and they went better than expected.”
Many unsung heroes worked both directly with patients and behind the scenes to ensure a successful move. Our thanks go out to all of our employees, who have been preparing for this day for many months, with two mock moves, orientation sessions, and logistical planning.
“It’s been a great day,” said Lynne Whaley, RN, chief nurse executive. “This team is fabulous.”
