Family Medicine Residency Program
Program Overview
The mission of the Family Medicine Residency Program is to provide excellent education for its residents, in order that they may graduate as competent, concerned and compassionate family physicians who will be comfortable practicing in urban and rural settings and able to collaborate with other health care professionals to satisfy the needs of a multicultural population.
Accreditation and Affiliation
The White Memorial Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education of the American Medical Association. It is affiliated with the Loma Linda University, School of Medicine and the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine.
The Family Health Center
The mission of the Family Health Center is to serve as a primary care center of excellence, dedicated to training superior family physicians and other health care professionals, and to providing high quality, culturally-sensitive medical care to the community.
The Family Health Center combines the efforts of the Family Medicine Residents, Board Certified Family Medicine Physicians and other clinicians to provide high quality, accessible, and cost effective medical care. The Family Health Center and its staff are dedicated to improving the quality of life and health status of the people who live in the surrounding communities.
The Family Health Center is a state of the art 10,000 square foot facility which provides two or more examining rooms for each resident who is seeing patients. Special procedure rooms, laboratory, counseling room, a business office, resource library, and a conference room are available. Teaching is the primary function of this setting. To this end, a designated patient population of families of all ages is recruited from the surrounding community.
Every effort is made to enroll entire families in the Center's patient populations. An effort is also made to see that each resident's practice contains all appropriate ages, as well as appropriately varied pathology, adequate numbers of obstetrical cases, and representation of all ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
The Center features the team approach to patient care. Each team includes a faculty team leader, residents and non-physician health care providers including a behavioral scientist, a Health Educator, Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner and Social Worker. A Behavioral Scientist and the faculty team leader or preceptor faculty are assigned to the Center on a schedule which maximizes continuity of contact of resident and faculty and permits a more accurate assessment of the growth of skills, confidence and practice effectiveness of each resident. The resident learns to appropriately utilize the skills of the various team members and learns about "the business of medicine" from the faculty, clinic manager, clerical employees, and participation on the Family Health Center Resident Group Practice Committee and the Family Health Center Quality Improvement Committee. In the Family Health Center, each resident develops his or her own panel of patients in a group practice for the entire 3-year period of the residency.
