Rehabilitation Services

White Memorial Medical Center offers a multidisciplinary inpatient medical rehabilitation program to patients with disabilities or impairments imposed by injury or disease. Services and therapies are individually designed to improve patients' physical, psychosocial, communication and cognitive abilities. Our rehabilitation goal is to restore patients to a level of self-sufficiency that enables them to resume a functional and productive lifestyle. It is our commitment to deliver high quality and cost-effective services.

Our Services

We offer Acute Rehabilitation, Comprehensive Outpatient Services, Home Health Services, and Adult Day Care Services through AltaMed Senior Buena Care and Rugby Plaza Programs for the following conditions:

  • Strokes/Neurological Disorders
  • Brain Injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Musculoskeletal Injury
  • Fractures
  • Amputations
  • Joint Replacement
  • Arthritis
  • Burns
  • Swallowing Disorders
  • Pulmonary Disorders

Inpatient Rehabilitation Program

The inpatient rehabilitation program treats about 250 patients each year. Treatment is delivered under the medical direction of a physiatrist who is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Members of the interdisciplinary treatment team may include:

  • Primary Care/Consulting Physicians
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech-Language Pathology
  • Recreation Therapy
  • Rehabilitation Nursing
  • Rehabilitation Psychology
  • Social Services
Other specialized services include:
  • Community Training
  • Home Site Evaluations
  • Neurodiagnostics (EEG, EMG, ABR)
  • Patient/Family Education and Counseling
  • Pool Therapy
  • Pet Therapy
  • Referral/Coordination with Community Resources or Professional Services

Referral Process

To receive inpatient rehabilitation, a patient must be:

  • Medically stable
  • Able to tolerate 3 hours of therapy on a daily basis
  • Have a Rehabilitation diagnosis
  • Have an identified discharge plan
  • Be referred by a physician, hospital or SNF
The following types of patients cannot be seen on the rehabilitation unit, but can receive therapy services by an interdisciplinary team in the hospital units designated for these patients (SNF unit, pediatric unit):
  • Ventilator dependent patients
  • Pediatric patients

WMMC provides on-site assessment of patients to determine eligibility for transfer to the Rehabilitation unit. If a patient is not an appropriate rehab candidate, alternative placement recommendations will be provided to referring case manager, hospital, physician or SNF.

Health Plans

White Memorial Medical Center has contracts with most major HMO plans and accepts most health plans (Medicare, Medi-Cal, Worker's Compensation, HMO).

Health plan authorization/qualification will be verified during the pre-admission process. If rehab services are not covered, alternative recommendations will be provided to referral source.

White Memorial Medical Center is accredited by Joint Commission. The inpatient rehabilitation program is CARF accredited.
