About White Memorial

From Our Chairman & CEO
It was 94 years ago that the College of Medical Evangelists, now Loma Linda University, opened a small storefront clinic on First Street to train young doctors and serve the residents of Boyle Heights, a vibrant neighborhood just east of downtown Los Angeles. Inspired by the visionary leadership of hospital namesake Ellen G. White and the values of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, these pioneers raised the bar for medical training and quality of care by requiring medical students to complete four years of study, which was unheard of in those days.
The small clinic they founded has evolved and expanded over the years to keep up with the growing population in our neighborhood and the city of Los Angeles. The legacy they created is known today as White Memorial Medical Center, owned by Adventist Health and affiliated with the Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
Those of us who work and practice medicine at White Memorial share a common bond. We are a family of devoted professionals—physicians, nurses, patient care staff, administrators and support staff—who believe strongly in the mission and values of our hospital. We strive to deliver excellent care to all of our patients, meeting the needs of the whole person and doing so regardless of our patients’ circumstances or ability to pay. Our approach defines our spirit of service and our workplace culture.
In 2006, we published our first social responsibility report. As proud as we were of the finished product, we’re more pleased about what we learned through the process. This year, we published a Progress Report, which is an update to that first report and a reaffirmation of our continued commitment to earn the trust of the people we serve.
As our 100th anniversary nears, we remains steadfastly dedicated to our faith and mission as we continually strive to become a better hospital, a better employer and a better neighbor every year. This is our promise to the people we serve.
