Our Workplace Culture

Employee Group PrayingWhat distinguishes WMMC from other hospitals is the emphasis we place on being a family of caring people who work together with a common mission.

Our workforce has never been represented by a union. We believe this speaks to the caring and respectful workplace culture that exists at WMMC. This culture is built on trust, shared values and a higher sense of mission, and it is supported by our open-door policy that encourages strong and consistent communication between management and staff.

When issues arise, we address them by working together and by giving each other a voice in shaping our workplace practices. In 2006, based on suggestions from the employee satisfaction survey, we implemented informal employee gatherings as another way to engage our workforce in the decision-making process.

Workplace Culture GraphOver time, we have gathered employee feedback and compared ourselves to other hospitals to assess how we can best serve each other. As a result, we have adopted and improved certain programs and practices to ensure we are continually fostering a workplace environment that inspires trust and fairness.

For example, we annually review our pay scales and benefits, using market data to evaluate whether we are paying competitive salaries for the relevant skill sets.

Other ways WMMC strives to be a responsible employer includes:

  • Offering a comprehensive benefits package to eligible part-and full-time employees.

  • Encouraging two-way communication between our staff and hospital leadership. For example, our departments hold brief daily meetings called the Daily Huddle, designed to exchange timely information, provide feedback and work through concerns.

  • Recognizing our employees for their contributions to the organization with awards and other forms of acknowledgement.

  • Encouraging the use of carpools and mass transit through Metro subsidies and other incentives.

  • Partnering with the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation to provide on-site childcare for employees and community residents.

  • Offering on-site housing options for physician residents and other new hires.

  • Encouraging and recognizing employee giving and volunteerism.

  • Fostering a teaching and learning environment.

With this focus, we believe that employee loyalty will increase, and most important, that WMMC will continue to be a stronger, more vital resource in our community.
